The Darién Gap
Undertaking biodiversity research in the Darién Gap to support conservation efforts in the vulnerable Chucunaque River Corridor
Background
In collaboration with Endangered Rainforest Rescue (ERR), the Fauna Forever team will be heading to Panama to undertake site scouting and biodiveristy baseline researcch expeditions within the iconic Darién Gap.
The Darién region of Panamá is one of the most ecologically significant areas in the Americas, often referred to as a
“Biological Corridor of the Americas” that connects North and South America. This region is vital not only for species migration
but also for preserving critical ecosystems that regulate the global climate. Panamá’s position as a narrow land bridge
between the two continents means the Darién’s forests serve as a crucial passage for wildlife, including migratory species that
travel between the northern and southern hemispheres.
What to expect...
We will work across properties along the Chucunaque River Corridor, spannning riverine, swamp, and tropical lowland forest habitats, channeling biodiversity from the surrounding intact forests.
Our research will focus on birds, bats, mammals and herpetofauna. Volunteers and interns can expect to encounter a range of species across various groups, whilst directly assisting in the hands-on research and data collection that will contribute to conservation and reforestation efforts in the region. Interns will be exposed to a range of research techniques and get the opportunity to develop their field skills in one of the most rugged and raw regions of lowland jungle in the world.

How can I join?
After undertaking our initial exploratory scouting trip from in September 2025 we are thrilled to announce our first research expedition in Darien Gap, Panama.
The second expedition will run from 15th February to 25th March 2026 (dates tentative and may change by a couple of days either side) where we will undertake biodiversity baseline research and data collection across the selected properties.
The cost for the full expedition will be $3510 USD (excluding international travel, personal insurance and additional nights accommodation and meals outside of the expedition duration).
